Welcome, Professional Parents!

Hello, I'm Emily, and I would consider myself a professional parent. You may be wondering what exactly a professional parent is---I wondered the same thing myself when I became a stay-at-home-mom to my two boys, Oliver (2) and Charlie (6 months) 
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines professional as follows:
"One that is professional. Especially one that engages in a pursuit or activity professionally"

So what makes me a professional? To answer simply, being a mom and wanting to help my children grow up well by expanding my own knowledge and creativity. And you are a professional too, just because you are searching for new activity ideas, knowledge, and help from this blog.

It is my wish that this blog inspires you to try new things with your children, gives you ideas to inspire your own parenthood journey, and helps simplify "the hardest job in the world".

Encouraging Kids to be Household Helpers

When we toured daycare centers for Oliver we looked at various types of care centers: a church school, a nature-based facility, in-homes, traditional centers, and a Montessori. We ultimately chose an in-home provider, but we still talk about the Montessori school and the ideals of Montessori. For those unfamiliar with Montessori (i.e. me a few years ago!), here is a great definition: Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play. In Montessori classrooms children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the highly trained teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process. Personally, I was baffled when I started staying home with my toddler. How do I occupy him? How can I play with him? Can't he play by himself? As a toddler parent, I often find myself living in 15-30 minutes windows of attention for an activity, my goal is to fill each day as much as possible with enriching activities that let him explore and play on his own, are educational, or just get him off my hands for a minute!
